Dear RSA,
When I'm at home, I like to masturbate with a Hitachi Magic Wand, but it's kind of noisy and now that I live in a dorm I'm afraid my roommate will hear me. What vibrators are quiet enough to use in a dorm room?
Annika, Penn State

Annika,
The Magic Wand is a perennial favorite among women, and for good reason. Unfortunately, it is loud enough to be heard in close quarters, and might even wake your roommate up, so I can't recommend it for dorm use. However, there are many vibrators that are nearly silent, and you may find one of these suits your needs.

First you will want to look for a battery-powered vibrator, as a power cord will certainly give you away. Second, go for a small vibrator - they tend to be quieter. Bullet vibrators are perfect. Third, look for a vibrator that features speeds that adjust on a dial, rather than clicking from low speed to high like the Hitachi. Also, vibrators that are encased in jelly rubber can be quieter, as the jelly absorbs some of the sound. A quieter vibrator may produce somewhat less intense sensations, so it may take some getting used to if you like the intensity of the Hitachi.

Finally, remember that no vibrator is going to be completely silent. If you're still worried about your roommate hearing your vibe, try muffling the sound by putting some thick comforters on your bed, or hold a pillow over your crotch while you're using the vibe to smother the vibrations.
